Cozumel, also known as the Swallow Islands, is a Carribean Island which belongs to the region of Quntana Roo, situated in the mexican Riviera Maya, opposite the coast of Playa del Carmen beach.
The population is around 100,000 inhabitants, with tourism the islands main source of economic income, especially through cruises. Whereas Cozumel isnt a particularly large island, covering an area of 600 km2, it is the most populated island in the country, in the state of Sonora. 20 kilometres of Carribean Sea separate the island from Playa del Carmen beach, with 45 kilmoteres of distance between the island and Cancun...both places easily accessible from the island by boat or sea plane.
The main economical activity on the island is tourism, which inevitably means that when on holiday in Cozumel, you will find the standard of tourist services to be very high, with large numbers of bars, restaurants, hotels, hostels and holiday houses / apartments for an island so small!
